It is said, that Tenby, is the ‘jewel in the crown’ of Pembrokeshire. How sad then, that we are denied one facet of this gem, which lies neglected and unseen.
St Catherine’s Island and Fortress are of great historical importance. This magnificent architectural treasure has a story to tell. From it’s earliest settlement and ecclesiastical past; the political intrigue of the British Empire’s military investment; tales from Gun Fort House, when it was a summer retreat of a wealthy Victorian industrialist, and it's foray as a zoo.
Since then it has stood empty and abandoned in private hands with no public access. It has become yet another decaying relic of our cultural heritage. This Fort was constructed to protect us. Time perhaps to return the favour, and renew our interest in protecting it.
Please send us your stories and pictures. Let us make this archive a valuable resource for future generations, and bring to life once again, this awe inspiring and unique location. |
